Hiking
Great hike combining a relatively smooth, wide trail, great view, and super accessible, within two minutes of downtown Brattleboro, or simply park downtown and walk across the Connecticut River bridge. Best view is at the top but it’s rewarding all along the way with beautiful forests. Or, go to the same trailhead and simply enjoy the relatively flat walk above the river.

Highly walkable trail brings you to the summit of Mount Olga in under an hour. Signs along the way teach you about the forest as you walk through a historic ski area. If you can stomach heights, the fire tower at the top gives you an incredible 360-degree view of southern Vermont. Highly recommended! Going in via the Hogback overlook is free, or you can visit nearby Mount Olga State Park for a fee and enjoy additional trails and amenities.
For more of a full-day experience than the other hikes posted here, climb Stratton Mountain, home of the ski resort of the same name. It follows a section of the Appalachian/Long Trail. Vista openings along the trail offer beautiful views of Somerset Reservoir to the south. At the summit of Stratton Mountain, you may climb a recently renovated 70 ft. fire tower that was originally erected by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934. The tower offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of the Green Mountain range and the Taconic Mountains to the west.
